A Vacuum gauge is perhaps the best indicator of your car's engine. As we all know that the engine is a kind of large air pump. If you see your engine that way, it will help you understand, how a vacuum gauge works.

The vacuum inside the car engine works at a pressure that is lower than the atmospheric pressure. The vacuum gauge is attached to the intake manifold. The purpose of the vacuum is very simple: it helps in the smooth running of your engine's exhaust system. If the vacuum is not performing properly, it will lead to serious trouble with your car engine. This makes it very important to watch the engine vacuum at all times. The vacuum gauge serves just that purpose.

The vacuum gauge compares the vacuum inside the inlet manifold with the atmospheric pressure outside the manifold. The performance of your engine depends highly on the reading shown by the vacuum gauge. This makes it imperative to know the ideal reading for the optimum performance of your engine.

If there is a vacuum leak in your engine, the reading of the vacuum gauge can drop from an average to a lower reading. If more than one cylinder is leaking, then the drop in the reading will be much more acute. You can run a compression test in order to locate the leaking point.

The most common usage of a vacuum gauge is to test the vehicle for possible problems with the engine. The vacuum gauge is connected to the inlet manifold. It should be kept in mind that the engine vacuum is being compared with the atmospheric pressure so the reading will vary at different altitudes. The engine vacuum will be lower at higher altitude. It should also be noted that the readings of a vacuum gauge vary from vehicle to vehicle because some vehicles are designed with low vacuum motors. After getting a hang of the vacuum gauge, you can become pretty good at judging the reading on your vacuum gauge.

You can conduct a few tests with your vacuum gauge. These will help you find engine problems. If you push the accelerator, you will see that the manifold pressure reads from negative towards zero which is the atmospheric pressure. When your engine is running at high RPM, you will observe higher vacuum readings. The vacuum gauge is also a kind of fuel indicator. Obviously, you are burning more fuel when the vacuum is low.

A vacuum gauge can alert you when the vacuum level in your car becomes low. It can help you take care of the problem before it gets out of hand and costs your serious money. 18 to 22 is a normal vacuum level. If the reading is below 18, it can indicate a leak in your vacuum system. A level higher than 22 indicates that the engine is giving its peak performance.
